Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

General Questions

What is The Virtue Letters?

The Virtue Letters is a Catholic subscription letter service for children ages 8 and up. Twice a month, your child receives a beautifully crafted physical letter in the mail, addressed to them by name. Each letter focuses on one virtue, and brings that virtue to life through immersive storytelling, inspiring saint stories, reflection questions, Virtue Challenges, prayers, and fun surprises in each mailing.

Each series includes 24 letters in total, covering the full range of virtues—from faith, hope, and charity, to prudence, fortitude, and humility—delivered over the course of a year.

Is The Virtue Letters a one-time subscription, or is there more to come?

The Discovery Series is just the beginning. The Virtue Letters is designed as a multi-year journey. Each new series revisits the virtues through entirely new saints and stories, but with greater depth—meeting your child where they are and challenging them to grow further in their faith and character.

Think of it as a formation experience that builds on itself, year after year. The Discovery Series is where the journey begins. What comes next takes it further.

New series are already in development. Current subscribers will be the first to hear what's coming.

What does a subscription include?

A Virtue Letters subscription includes 24 illustrated letters mailed across 12 months: two per month, delivered to your child's mailbox.

Each letter is beautifully crafted and explores virtues like faith, fortitude, generosity, hope, charity, and more—all brought to life through powerful, immersive storytelling.

In addition to the letters, each mailing includes other fun surprise extras like stickers, prayer cards, maps, framable art prints, postcards and more.

Who is it for?

The Virtue Letters is for anyone seeking to grow happy, whole, and holy kids.

Our letters are written for children ages 8 and up. The content is age-appropriate throughout that range: accessible enough for an 8-year-old to read alone, and rich enough to give a 14-year-old something to think about. Many families read the letters together, making them natural conversation-starters at the dinner table.

Parents and grandparents often subscribe as a gift for First Communions, birthdays, Christmas, feast days, or just because. The letters arrive addressed to the child by name.

Will my subscription auto-renew?

Nope. None of our subscriptions auto-renew. That's not how we do things.

Whether you choose Prepaid or Monthly, your subscription runs for the full 12 months and then simply ends. No surprise charges. No "we hope you didn't notice" renewals.

Near the end of your 12 months, we'll send you a heads-up so you can decide whether to continue with the next series. If you do, great. If you don't, you're done—no cancellation needed.

Is The Virtue Letters for Catholics?

Yes. The Virtue Letters is rooted in Catholic theology and tradition. The virtue framework draws from the Theological Virtues, the Cardinal Virtues, the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Fruits of the Holy Spirit, and the Lively Virtues—the full scope of moral and spiritual formation as the Church has always understood it.

Is the content appropriate? Can I trust what my child is reading?

We created the Virtue Letters for families just like our own—Catholic families who are seeking to raise whole and holy kids. Every letter is crafted to be wholesome, true, and beautiful. There’s nothing inappropriate, agenda-driven, or unsuitable for children. The stories deal honestly with real courage, real suffering, and real virtue, just like the saints' lives, but always in a way that is age-appropriate and faith-building.

We want every parent and grandparent to open these letters themselves and feel proud of what their child is receiving.

Is your artwork AI-generated?

No.

Every illustration in The Virtue Letters is created by real human artists. We believe the beauty of the saints' stories deserves art made with the same love and dedication those stories embody.

How is this different from a book about saints?

We LOVE books, and our shelves are filled with so many great books about the saints. And while we encourage reading independently and as a family, there's just something magical about snail mail.

When a child receives a physical letter in the mail, addressed to him or her by name, it carries a magic that's different from books. Kids who may resist sitting down with a book will read their letter the moment it arrives, often more than once, and then save them.

Beyond the format, each letter is also specifically designed for formation, not just information. The goal isn't just to teach kids about St. Joan of Arc. It's to help them understand what Fortitude is, why it matters, and how to practice it in everyday life.

Which virtues are covered?

Over the course of each 24-letter series, we cover the full range of virtues, including the Theological Virtues, the Cardinal Virtues, Gifts of the Holy Spirit, Fruits of the Holy Spirit, and Lively Virtues.

Each virtue is brought to life through immersive storytelling, lessons
from the lives of the saints, puzzles and activities, scripture and prayer, fun surprises, and practical ways to practice the virtues in our daily lives.

Who are the featured saints?

Each letter highlights different saints who embody that letter's virtue in a compelling, story-worthy way. The series includes well-known saints alongside lesser-known saints whose lives are just as inspiring.

Gifting

Can I give this as a gift?

Absolutely. Gifting is one of the most common ways families discover The Virtue Letters. At checkout, simply enter the recipient's name and mailing address in the "Delivery" section at checkout.

Your child, grandchild, or godchild will receive every letter addressed to them personally. No pricing information is included with the letters.

How does gifting work?

Gifting is easy. Here's all you need to do:

  1. Choose a payment option (prepaid annual or monthly billing), enter your preferred start date, and add it to your cart.
  2. Enter the recipient's name and mailing address in the 'Delivery' section at checkout, so their letters go directly to them.
  3. Enter your own billing information. All receipts and billing details come to your email only.
  4. Complete your order and watch for a confirmation email.
  5. Download your Gift Introduction Card. After purchase, you'll have immediate access to a printable Gift Introduction Card (PDF). This is a beautifully designed card you can print and tuck into an envelope, attach to a gift, or email directly to your recipient so they know something wonderful is on its way. Perfect for First Communions, birthdays, Christmas, and grandparent gifts.

Can I choose when the first letter ships?

Certainly.

On the product page, before you "Add to Cart" you can enter a preferred start date. We will begin your child’s subscription on the mailing date you select.

We mail on the 1st and 15th of each month. If those fall on a Sunday or a federal holiday, we'll mail on the next business day.

Can I order multiple subscriptions?

Yes, you can easily order multiple subscriptions, but our store is only
set up to receive one subscription order at a time. To order multiple
subscriptions, simply complete the checkout for the first recipient, then
return to place a new order for each additional recipient, entering their
individual name and address each time.

You can also send a single subscription to multiple members of the same
household. Simply enter all their names in the "Delivery" field at checkout. For example:

First Name: "Elizabeth, Michael & Patrick"
Last Name: “Doyle”

Or another popular option:

First Name: “The Doyle”
Last Name: “Family”

I'd like all my kids to receive this. Can I add multiple names to the envelope?

Yes, you can either order a single subscription for each child, or you
can send a single subscription to multiple members of a household. Simply enter all their names in the "Letter Recipient Name" field at checkout. For example:

First Name: "Elizabeth, Michael & Patrick"
Last Name: “Doyle”

Or another popular option:

First Name: “The Doyle”
Last Name: “Family”

How can I let my child know a gift subscription is coming?

After purchase, you'll have immediate access to a downloadable Gift Introduction Card, a beautifully designed card that you can use to announce your gift and introduce The Virtue Letters.

You can print it on standard cardstock (8.5” × 11," folded in thirds to fit a standard envelope) for a hand-delivered reveal, or email the PDF for instant delivery.

It's a great way to make the gift feel complete, even before the first letter arrives.

Delivery & Shipping

When will the first letter arrive?

Your first letter will ship on the start date you selected at checkout. All letters are sent via USPS first-class mail and typically arrive within 5-8 business days of shipping.

After your first letter, new letters are mailed on the 1st and 15th of each month, for a total of 24 letters over 12 months.

We use USPS first-class mail rather than tracked shipping, which keeps our costs down and lets us pass that savings on to you as free shipping on every order. If you'd like to know when your letters are arriving, we recommend signing up for Informed Delivery, a free USPS service that emails you scanned images of your incoming mail.

If you don't receive a letter within 14 business days of its expected mailing date, please reach out to us at support@TheVirtueLetters.com with the following information, and we'll happily send a replacement at no cost:

  • The order # or the email you ordered with
  • The name of the recipient
  • The recipient's address
  • Which letter is missing (e.g., "Letter 3" or "the December 15 mailing")
Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship within the United States. International shipping is something we hope to offer in the future. If you're outside the US and interested, please contact us and we'll let you know when it becomes available.

What if I need to change the mailing address for a letter subscription?

Please contact us as soon as possible if the mailing address for your subscription changes. We'll be happy to help.

Important: Updating your account information does not automatically
update your mailing address in our system, and USPS address forwarding does not apply to standard letter mail.

To ensure your letters reach the correct address, please notify us directly at support@TheVirtueLetters.com with your order number and your old and new addresses. We recommend notifying us at least three weeks before a move.

What if a letter gets lost or doesn't arrive?

Just contact us and we'll make it right. Letters lost or damaged in transit will be resent at no cost to you.

If you believe a letter is missing, please give it 14 business days from the expected mail date before reaching out. Occasionally, USPS delays are the culprit.

When you contact us, please include your order number, the recipient's name, and the letter number you're missing.

We also recommend signing up for USPS Informed Delivery (free) so you can track incoming mail before it arrives. You can sign up here.

Payment & Cancellation

How much does it cost?

When billed monthly, a subscription is $13/month. A full-year prepaid subscription is $129—a savings of $27 compared to monthly billing, and the simplest way to give a full year's gift at once.

Both options include all 24 letters delivered over 12 months. Once the 24-letter series is completed, the subscription does not auto-renew.

We’ll notify you when your gift subscription is nearing the end, so you can choose if you’d like to subscribe to the next series of letters.

Can I cancel my subscription?

Yes. How cancellation works depends on which plan you have.

Monthly subscribers can cancel at any time through their Account Portal. If you cancel within the first 30 days of purchase, you'll receive a full refund and can keep any letters already received. After 30 days, monthly payments already collected are non-refundable, but you can cancel future billings at any time. Any letters you've already paid for will still ship.

Prepaid subscribers are paid in full at purchase and do not auto-renew, so there is no ongoing subscription to cancel. If you'd like a full refund within 30 days of purchase, please contact us at support@TheVirtueLetters.com. You'll receive a full refund and can keep any letters already received. After 30 days, prepaid subscriptions are non-refundable, and remaining letters will continue to ship on schedule for the full 12-month term.

If you would like us to stop mailing letters at any point—even after the 30-day refund window has closed—just let us know at support@TheVirtueLetters.com. Prepaid amounts are non-refundable, but we'll stop future mailings at your request.

If you have any questions about cancelling, just reply to any email from us or reach out to support@TheVirtueLetters.com and we'll help.

Other Questions

My child doesn't love reading. Will this work for them?

We totally understand that not all kids love to read. That’s why we’ve designed The Virtue Letters to be visually interesting, with lots of images and activities. Our letters are designed to be browse-able. They are short enough to read in one sitting, illustrated throughout, and written to grab attention from the first line. We think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Also, there's just something about magical about receiving a personally addressed letter that helps to bypass that usual resistance. It feels like mail, not homework.

Can a parent or grandparent read along with their child?

Absolutely, and we encourage it. The letters are written for children, but the virtue content and saint stories give adults plenty to reflect on, too. Many families use them as a starting point for dinner table conversations. And grandparents who give subscriptions often find they have something new to talk about with their grandchildren every two weeks.

How can I reach you?

We're a small but mighty team and we read every message. You can reach us at hello@TheVirtueLetters.com. We'll get back to you within 1-3 business days.
